TRANS] 090915 SONGS Magazine with Jejung and Yuchun

A ‘Special Project Unit’ by JeJung and YuChun from the 5 members idol group Tohoshinki who had successfully performed at Tokyo Dome, and actively involved in A-nation was born!

The soothing song 『COLORS~Melody and Harmony~』and one that shown its exorbitant standard 『Shelter』are the creation of JeJung and YuChun.

This single is filled with not only the work of singers, but also the unlimited charisma of its creator.

『COLORS~Melody and Harmony~』is one of the songs that Tohoshinki performed during their 4th live tour at Tokyo Dome.


YC: JeJung is the one who started this song. After that, we found that the style of this song is suitable for the both of us, and decided to perform at Tokyo Dome. Also, both of us composed the melody. The genre is something that we have never tried before, it is a song that can only be performed by two.

JJ: The songs that Tohoshinki sang are mostly harmonious, therefore YuChun and I have always wanted to come out with something that is enjoyable, a catchy song that can be sung by everyone. This song is close to what we are looking for, so we performed it during our Tokyo Dome concert.

The music is the creation of both, then how did you achieve that?


JJ: Though we are always busy with work, we have to find time out for our creation. Therefore, I normally insert the music into my laptop, and continue back at the dorm.

YC: But『COLORS~Melody and Harmony~』is completed in a short time under a stressless condition.

JJ: If the composer is not sure of his own thinking, isn't it tougher for his listener? However, if the composer's thinking is clear and pure, then the message that reaches his listener will be simple and understandable. Therefore, during composing, we did not think of the complicated matters.

After the cooperation of each other, what comment do you have for each other?

JJ: I was once badly criticized, and learnt a lot during reflection.

What is the criticism?

JJ: For example, "why is it still this feeling? Isn't it the same as before!”

YC: I was just joking (laugh~).

JJ: Even though it was just a joke but it's still a harsh comment (laugh~~), YuChun is very straightforward. If it's something really good, he will say, "GREAT!" but if it's something unsatisfying then he will give the previous comment. (Laugh~)

Then, what do you think of YuChun's song?

JJ: Didn't he write a song 『Kiss The Baby Sky』? When I first heard that, I was amazed, isn't this genius? Being able to insert happiness and loneliness into a song is really remarkable.”

YC: Though we use the same equipment and software, but what we created are totally different. Therefore it's like whatever I lack is what JeJung have, and I have whatever JeJung is lack of.

JJ: Yes. YuChun is really good with musical instruments. But his skill at composing music is...…

YC: (Laugh out Loud). I'm really bad at composing music as compared with JeJung. Because I like live band music, therefore our style of music is totally different.

What is the charisma of each other being a singer?

YC: The sweet and almost melted beautiful voice of JeJung, can simply delude all girls the moment they hear it.

JJ: Thanks ah~ (Laugh). YuChun ah~, is gifted with a handsome voice. He has the ability to carry off any type of song beautifully, be it a fast song or a sad ballad.

Then 『COLORS~Melody and Harmony~』, what is the vibe while performing this song?

JJ: It didn't bother me how to sing it well. On the other hand, what's most important is how do I feel at the very moment. I sing it naturally with a smile on my face, while having the feeling of seeing the one that I like, as simple as that.

YC: Same goes for me, sing it without any pressure. Showing the real me. Therefore, we did not put on any make up and went on stage to perform. (Laugh!)

JJ: Cut cost, cut cost! (Laugh~)

Then, what's the meaning of the lyrics you want to express?


YC: To date, all our songs are mostly based on romance, this time around, it's a song of thankfulness.

JJ: What I especially like the most is, even if just for a second, to stop all the tears all around the world, and turn them into a smile.

The both of you are always in hopes of this feeling?

JJ: Though I'm not sure whether we can gain happiness through songs, but I believe the ones who heard will have a good mood. Especially this is a relaxing song, therefore everyone must listen to it in the morning, on the train and bus. If you do it, all your surrounding might change to the better.

YC: I normally listen to music during breakfast, and in a café, waving at strangers. It will totally change your mood.

JJ: I listen to music at night too. One day, there was a mosquito on top of my wrist. I thought, ah~ this mosquito is not going to live long, then no harm letting it suck a little of my blood.”

You always treated this type of matter kindly? (Laugh)

JJ: Yes. Thanks to this song, I had become a gentle person. (Laugh)

Next, "Colors" is used as the title...

JJ: Asking what's our favourite color? Alright, let's say this together. One, two, BLACK!

YC: WHITE!

Based on this, seems like this question was asked during other interviews (laugh). Then let's have another question related to colors. Do both of you have the same colors in your rooms?

JJ: Ah~ this is an interesting question. If the same question is asked over and over again, readers might get bored from it. Slight change will always have some fun to it.

Thanks (laugh). Then, please answer me.

YC: For me, I have a lot of black colored shelf for keeping wine. All were designed by me. I had a hard time cleaning them. (Laugh)

JJ: My room is filled with all messy/different colors. (Laugh)

YC: Not only the colors, even the room itself is in a mess. (Laugh) I went to JeJung's room after I woke up this morning. Though he did try to clean up a little, but his clothes totally filled his bed, like a tiny hill. (=_=|||)

JJ: If I have to tidy them up, I have to start from the bed. But I always quit half way through, therefore I will go to YuChun's room at night to sleep with him.

(Laugh) Then, all your composing equipment and other instruments are all in the room?

YC: It will be good if we have them, but we don't have them in our Japan dorm. But I wish we could have one in Japan too.

JJ: When will it come true?

I'm looking forward to it. And another single, 『Shelter』 will also be introduced.

YC: The music was written by Jejung! It was a challenge for him since the music is kind of different from the usual music Jejung composes.

JJ: From the intro until part A and B, the melody is pretty dark and heavy. But starting from chorus, the beat starts to be faster and brighter. I did enjoy this transition.

What kind of message are the lyrics filled with?

JJ: My world won't exist if there is no you. You may not know about me, but I still keep thinking of you. It sounds like a stalker (laughs). It's like this, a person doesn't even know a thing about another person, but this person somehow feels strength and encouragement just for the fact that the person does exist. So this song tries to express an appreciation for the existence of someone to another person.

YC: The meaning that connects this song with COLORS is (both expressing) a thankful mind. But when COLORS is a song with simple kind of music, Shelter's music is more complicated. So it's a good balance.

The two songs are really great, what is the secret behind your wonderful voices?

JJ: I think as long as you like it, it can be achieved no matter what, practicing is the most important. Even if you lack in skill and technique, it is not a problem at all. If you like it and are determined to do it, you will definitely accomplish it. Because I was tone-deaf during high school, I was really bad at singing. However, I did not give up and continued practicing.

YC: What we wish to say is that by keeping the imagination, use the true heart to perform the song's messages. Everyone have to give it a try too.

JJ: Everyone please use a sweet, fine, light-hearted feeling to sing『COLORS~Melody and Harmony~』. Even if you do not have the lyrics, you can sing it to“la la la!! Hope that everyone can sing it effortlessly.

YC: You have to sing it with a feeling of wanting to tidy up your room! (LAUGH!!)
